SPORES features a mobile phone mast designed to look like a tree. The film imagines an alternate present where the ‘tree’ becomes sentient and self-propagates, releasing spores into the atmosphere.

The film was inspired by a news story about the “fake tree” phone mast planned for a town in Suffolk, UK. The town rejected plans to build the mast citing possible health risks and called it a blot on the landscape. The 17 metre high antenna (known as Macrocell SUF0191) was subsequently erected on an isolated hill nearby.
